Research abstract

50432-98-I Voltage and Frequency Insensitive Vapor Compressor Cycle Ice Plant--Lynntech, Inc., 7610 Eastmark Drive, Suite 202, College Station, TX 77840-4023; (409) 693-0017 Dr. Craig C. Andrews, Principal Investigator Dr. Oliver J. Murphy, Business Official DOE Grant No. DE-FG03-98ER82609 Amount: $75,000 Conventional vapor compression cycle systems are not suitable for use in low grade power grids. Variance in the grid voltage and frequency causes overheating of induction motors. The replacement of the conventional induction machine with a DC motor, coupled with a novel control system for unloading the compressor, will result in a field installation and testing of a 25 to 50 ton ice maker at the end of the Phase II effort. Phase I will result in the fabrication and testing of a 5 ton voltage and frequency insensitive compressor unit. This unit will be evaluated for performance and suitability for scale-up. Commercial Applications and Other Benefits as described by the awardee: This technology may be used with any refrigeration system on a small, low grade power grid. This would include mobile medical facilities, food storage, comfort air conditioning, etc._
