Research abstract

The U.S. Navy is seeking development of a solid-state data converter cabinet (DCC) that maintains or exceeds existing functionality. To address the Navyís need, Intellisense Systems, Inc. (Intellisense) proposes to develop a new Streamlined Modular and Modernized Backplane (SLICK) system based on a modular and reconfigurable printed circuit board (PCB) backplane design. Specifically, the innovation in a modular electronics PCB design with surface-mount technology components and a novel retrofittable and ruggedized rail mounting packaging that is man-portable will enable SLICK to retrofit to the existing Aegis fleet with minimal interface changes and minimal impacts to existing cables and ship services (power, cooling, electrical, etc.). The design will also comply with new construction DDG 51 shipbuilding delivery dates. Furthermore, SLICK can be designed with pin reconfigurability by using integrated field-programmable gate arrays to reassign data paths for future upgradable and extensible system configurations while maintaining existing interfaces to the SPG-62/MK82 topside antenna and director as well as digitizing the fire control system loop from the current analog MK200 system. As a result, this system will meet the Navyís requirements for existing functionality and qualifications with improved performance in signal integrity and capability. The PCB design will overcome deficiencies of the wire-wrap backplane technology, such as manufacturing time and availability of manufacturers, rework-ability, and repair. Finally, SLICK will provide future growth and upgradability that would not be achievable with wire-wrap board design, directly addressing NAVSEAís requirements. In Phase I, Intellisense will develop a concept for a solid-state DCC by creating a prototype to provide functionality equivalent to the existing design and demonstrate the feasibility of SLICK by performing modeling and analysis and comparing the new solid-state data to the existing data by means of using oscilloscopes, power supplies, signal generators and analyzers, and other test equipment. During the Phase I Option, Intellisense will finalize the initial design specifications and capabilities description to build a prototype solution in Phase II. In Phase II, we will further enhance the design and develop and deliver one or more notional full-scale prototypes that demonstrate functionality under the required service conditions, including testing in a relevant environment provided by the government and testing for military standard qualifications such as MIL-STD-810 and MIL-STD-461.
