Research abstract

RF deflecting cavities are an important component of particle accelerators. They allow simultaneous delivery of a particle beam to a number of experimental halls or targets. For example, at the Thomas Jefferson National Laboratory (JLAB), three separate 6 GeV, 499 MHz electron beams of different currents can be simultaneously delivered to three experimental halls. However, the existing JLAB deflector/separator system, which is based on a number of room temperature 499MHz RF cavities, will not be capable of deflecting the 11 GeV beam that will be available as part of the JLAB upgrade and delivering it at the same time to halls A, B, and C. This project will develop a new deflecting structure and cryomodule design that will restore this capability. The approach will be based on beam dynamics simulations and higher order mode (HOM) analysis. Commercial Applications and other Benefits as described by the awardee: The new RF deflecting cavity should satisfy the requirements of JLAB¿s electron beam upgrade. In addition, the system would be marketed internationally to other existing and planned accelerator facilities.
