Research abstract

Undersea warfare (USW) testing relies on time-consuming, manually intensive quick-look reporting processes, where test engineers must analyze complex data streams from laboratory and at-sea tests, interpret results, and produce summaries for decision-makers. Variability in expertise, inconsistencies in interpretation, and delays in report generation introduce risks that impact operational readiness and equipment effectiveness. While AN/SQQ-89A(V)15 has standardized surface fleet data collection, significant challenges remain in efficiently structuring, analyzing, and curating test results for immediate use. The Recording Functional Segment (RecFS) offers a rich source of digital test data, but extracting mission-critical insights in real time remains an unsolved problem, often requiring days or weeks of human review. Furthermore, discrepanciesówhether due to equipment malfunctions or tactical inefficienciesócan directly affect the mission outcomes of commanding officers and sonar operators, making fast, reliable, and explainable analytics essential for modern USW testing.ÝColvin Run presents AQUA (Automated Quick-Look for Undersea Analytics), an AI/ML-powered tool designed to automate and standardize quick-look reporting for USW test environments. Leveraging Colvin Runís AI evaluation framework, AQUA optimizes AI-driven insights for real-world Navy applications, ensuring operator trust, mission relevance, and seamless integration with existing Navy testing platforms. The tool automates report generation, enhances metadata structuring, and embeds pre-test quality assurance (QA) checks, enabling test engineers to quickly identify discrepancies, reduce human workload, and improve test result consistency. Designed for scalability across simple and complex test scenarios, AQUA is built to support towed array calibration, multi-day, multi-objective testing, and future AI adoption.ÝBy focusing on secure AI integration, compliance, and transition pathways, AQUA directly aligns with DoD modernization priorities and IWS 5.0 Machine Learning Working Group objectives. The system will provide trusted, explainable AI analytics to enhance USW test efficiency, equipment readiness, and Navy decision-making capabilities, ensuring faster, more accurate, and mission-driven insights for undersea warfare operations.
