Research abstract

The Navy is seeking advanced technologies for the accurate measurement of local electric fields in maritime environments. By integrating the Spiral Quantum Interference Reflection-Symmetry Inductor (SQUIRL) quantum platform, we combine topological protection with entangled states to deliver robust, Heisenberg-limited sensitivity under dynamic and noisy conditions. By leveraging modularity, scalability, and room-temperature operation, our quantum sensors can be seamlessly integrated into Navy platforms, ensuring precise and reliable performance for mission-critical applications. Key features of the proposed quantum sensor include: Spin-momentum locking and chiral edge states for intrinsic noise resistance.Dual-mode electromagnetic sensing via the Stark effect (electric fields) and chiral edge currents (magnetic fields).Prototypes equipped with PCBs and Faraday shielding, showcasing robust sensitivity and scalability. A design roadmap focused on size and weight reduction to enhance deployability. Taken together, these features make SQUIRL a breakthrough in electric field sensing—combining the precision of quantum technology with the practicality of a deployable, room-temperature system. The proposed quantum platform will deliver significant advancements in underwater electric field sensing. This technology is a valuable tool for Navy operations and beyond, with commercialization potential spanning multiple high-impact industries, ensuring broad adoption and long-term sustainability.
