Research abstract

Quantum computer technology is critical and strategic to the Air Force. Quantum processor technology based on topological insulator (TI) qubits is inherently stable and fault-tolerant because it exploits local topological symmetries. TI are a new class of materials whose discovery resulted in the 2016 Nobel Prize. Our TI qubit technologyŚSQUIRLŚenables edge, room temperature quantum computing and is compatible with conventional silicon fabrication techniques. Wake Forest University Nanotech Center and Quoherent are working together to develop a TI quantum processor to produce the worldÆs-first Edge Quantum Processor for autonomous path planning, resource allocation, dynamic targeting, traffic management, autonomous flying of swarms and other critical Air Force missions, especially in contested, degraded, and operationally limited (CDO) environments. Development and testing to date have focused on single--Hadamard, and two-qubit--CNOT gates. To continue the development of a complete set of gates, the next logical step is the T-gate. Together these provide an optimal gate set for Edge Quantum Computing applications that involve specific algorithm needs for Air Force applications. Edge Quantum Computing systems that can be deployed on aircraft and autonomous systems will provide the Air Force with unmatched capability in real-time distributed decision support, machine learning and uncertainty reasoning, sensor fusion, and real-time optimization enabling autonomous decisions. This technological advantage and market interest in quantum computing has enabled us to raise capital with a group of west coast venture capital firms with experience in quantum computing investments.
