Research abstract
Not Available There is a need for a portable X-Ray System with appropriate software that can be used to document failure initiation and propagation on lap joints and joints with woven inserts. This system could be used to validate analytical and numerical failure analysis predictions. Additionally, the system could support Non-Destructive Evaluations on carriers, in repair depots, and in the field. The proposed portable X-Ray System, identified as RX-BOND, makes use of the unique resolution and imaging advantages of Reverse X-Ray technology. Additionally, the system is capable of Computed Tomography (CT) and utilizes the information contained in the diffracted X-Rays to measure peel stresses in the bondline. This multimode operational capability combined with system portability and ruggedness is much beyond the current state of the art. The feasibility of the RX-BOND system will be investigated during the Phase-I Basic Program. Additional tasks in the Phase-I Option concentrate on the portability issue and on the identification of a bonded structure on a Navy platform which could benefit from RX-BOND technology. This information will be submitted as part of a Phase-II readiness report.
