Research abstract

Excessive bleeding following traumatic injury is the leading cause of preventable combat deaths, and effective treatments often require platelet transfusions. However, the manufacture, transport, and storage of blood products results in a decline in platelet function. It is not generally recognized that fresh blood clots more readily, and there is currently no effective test to serve as quality control to establish the platelet functionality of a blood sample. HemoSight addresses this capability gap by measuring platelet contraction, a promising metric that can indicate all aspects of platelet function. HemoSight uses a laboratory-proven method that avoids the complexity, high cost, and subjectivity that has prevented the use of other blood assay systems in field settings. It is a novel, robust, high-throughput, low-sample-volume (<300µL) device that measures clot contraction dynamics, provides portability and ease-of-use, facilitates rapid decision-making, integrates with existing systems, and supports a wide range of applications including routine clinical diagnostics, point-of-care testing, and plate biology research. HemoSight can quantify the functional viability of platelets in Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) and whole blood and can provide this data to the user in the context of a range of values defined as clinically “normal”. In Phase I FTL will address robustness, power, speed, weight, throughput, usability, and the feasibility of miniaturization for handheld use.
