Research abstract

FTL's “Sub-seafloor High Resolution 3D Reconstruction (SHR3DR)” non-destructive evaluation (NDE) technology leverages a novel portable hardware rig together with an advanced 2D and 3D data processing pipeline to provide vital data about the subterranean environment below a wharf. SHR3DR can automatically pinpoint the locations of underground voids, pile depths, and structural damage over a very large area using a custom-trained neural network, with data gathered using unique sensing hardware that is quickly and easily deployable. SHR3DR enables both acceleration and cost savings of inspections of waterfront facilities ( including piers, wharfs, relieving-platforms, other shipyard structures) for voids (structural and soil), structures (piles, pile-caps, beams, utilities), and stability (load capacity, limits). Currently, determining pile depths or void instability is a costly, time-consuming, and manual process involving divers, the drilling of boreholes, or excavation of areas of an active wharf or other waterfront structure. FTL proposes this bottleneck can be alleviated through the use of a unique seismic sensor system, along with a custom software application to process the acoustic data for display to the user. SHR3DR combines novel signal processing with advanced post-processing algorithms using a neural network trained specifically on large seismic acoustic datasets. The technology delivers an at-a-glance view of the waterfront subterranean environment while reducing costs and enhancing the inspection process.
