Research abstract

Blast parameter measurement is imperative to improve and verify current theoretical predictions of new weapon effectiveness and structural responses to blasts. A number of variables such as fuse initiation, explosive charge shape, charge burn rate, andambient conditions determine blast wave characteristics and complicate theoretical predictions. Experimental verification of theoretical models is difficult because current state-of-the-art pressure and acceleration sensors are not capable of accuratelymeasuring the blast pressure wave. Their main disadvantage is limited frequency response, but also suffer from triboelectric cable noise, pyroelectric errors, and electromagnetic interference. F&S Inc. proposes to design miniature, rugged, fiber opticpressure and acceleration sensors capable of accurate blast wave measurement. The sensors possess improved frequency response, ultra-small size, EMI immunity, multiplexing capabilities, wide operational temperature range, and remote sensor interrogation upto several kilometers away. This new class of sensors will enable researchers to achieve much greater spatial resolution while maintaining excellent measurement resolution for miniature-scale blast tests that save time and money over similar experimentsconducted at full scale. F&S has assembled an experienced research and development team to demonstrate the feasibility of the sensors during Phase I and continued work during Phase II to ensure successful commercialization of this technology. BENEFITS: F&Senvisions commercial applications for these devices in industrial explosive device testing found in the oil and mine industry and road construction. Sensors developed in this program will also find applications in high pressure measurement in harshenvironments such as gas turbine engines, oil refineries, industrial manufacturing processes, and down-hole petroleum monitoring.
