Research abstract

Across the USAF, DoD, and commercial/enterprise markets, immersive technology continues to gain adoption and increasingly is seen as a fundamental component of modern training programs that seek to elevate the overall learner experience. Student-centric, adaptive, experiential learning is widely viewed as one of the best mediums for driving more effective and efficient learning outcomes.  It also greatly appeals to the incoming and next generation of Airmen, who have grown up with technology including the Internet, smartphones, Google, YouTube, and who expect information to be readily available with interactive, gamified delivery that has quickly outpaced the capabilities of traditional delivery methods such as computer-based training, PowerPoint, PDFs and other existing training materials.  This proposal will address the US Air Force’s and Air National Guard’s need to have the most current and accurate technical data available within immersive training environments. HTX Labs will be collaborating directly with the Air National Guard 101st Air Refueling Wing (ARW) Maintenance Squadron (MXS) located in Bangor ME to address the use case of providing optimal maintenance training for the F-108 engine. This project will involve development of an integration framework in EMPACT that will enable the real-time access of relevant F-108 file-based technical data (TOs) provided by the Air National Guard. Additionally, this project will involve expanding the AI-enablement of EMPACT across the training pipeline to optimize the use of technical data within immersive learning environments and to ensure that Airmen are training on the most current and accurate data available.
