Research abstract

This proposal outlines the development of two modular satellite prototypes, BX-02A Blackstar Prototype and BX-02B BlackStar Rocket Glider Prototype, and the BX-02C Hypersonic Test Platform designed to validate key functionalities for Space Sustainment and Maneuver (SSM) operations in alignment with SF243-D018 objectives. The focus is on establishing structural integrity, modular payload adaptability, refueling interfaces, recoverability, and autonomous operations. Two versions of the BX-02A  will be made. A Static Model will be used to perform ground testing of fuel transfer systems utilizing OrbitFab Refueling interface (RAFTI).  The second prototype the BX-02A Glider serves as a full-scale ground prototype, replicating the flight hardware and control surfaces of the final spacecraft design. It will undergo extensive ground-based testing, including wind tunnel, structural validation, electrical integration, and control surface performance assessments. A series of high-altitude drop tests, executed in partnership with Space Launch Delta - 45 (SLD-45), will provide critical data on vehicle descent dynamics, flight stability, and control mechanisms. The use of a parachute recovery system will allow for safe retrieval and subsequent analysis, demonstrating the spacecraft’s potential for return-to-Earth operations. The BX-02B Rocket Powered Glider is also a full-scale prototype featuring integrated Commercial Off-The-Shelf (COTS) microsatellite components. This vehicle will have a high pressure gas RCS system and accommodations for a 200mm diameter x 500mm kick motor. The vehicle will test the reaction control systems, modular payload bay, programming, ground control systems, and high speed aerodynamics. This stepping stone to the BX-02C Hypersonic Test Platform is designed as an adaptable testbed for orbital operations, it includes a patent-pending modular payload bay and is enclosed within a mylar-covered frame for thermal protection.  The project budget is set at $1.9 million, encompassing hardware development, software customization, regulatory compliance, launch expenses, and testing operations. Successful completion will advance BlackStar's reusable satellite technology to Technology Readiness Level 7 (TRL-7) and provide critical data for the development of a fully integrated prototype, enhancing strategic capabilities for space sustainment and maneuver in future warfare scenarios.
