Research abstract

Apech Labs is offering the DAF an ESPA-compatible satellite launch deployment and docking mechanism (LDDM). This mechanism lays the foundation to build a new common ESPA interface that allows for unprecedented payload integration speed, as well as offering refueling capabilities, satellite upgrading capabilities, and the ability to host inspection satellites. LDDM supports several USSPACECOM priorities and mission needs, including Sustained Space Operations and Maneuver and Integrated Space Fires. The mechanism is divided into an active and passive half.  The active half includes an actuated V-band hard capture system, and a scissor style actuated boom soft capture mechanism.  The passive half only requires a V-band flanged ring and passive capture probe.  The mechanism will be reusable for a minimum of 200 docking cycles.  LDDM-15 development includes the design and prototype of a storable-propellant compatible fluid coupler for refueling. This Direct-to-Phase II program will mature the design of a 15” LDDM system to a prototype level through design and hardware iterations. Apech Labs will environmentally test the system to key environments (including vibration and thermal vacuum testing), and demonstrate docking performance, culminating in a program end at TRL 7. This LDDM-15 program builds off Apech Labs’ work on a Phase I and Phase II NASA SBIR to develop an 8” (half-ESPA) sized LDDM. Apech Labs is a 2020 startup with extensive experience in complex aerospace product development and electromechanical actuation.  We will bring these capabilities to bear to provide the best possible offering to the DAF. Apech Labs expects a post-Phase II effort to include qualification and on-orbit demonstration.
