Research abstract
The IMPULSE Program aims to develop an advanced, dual-mode electric propulsion system that enhances space maneuverability and sustainment capabilities for both military and commercial satellites. The primary objective of the program is to design, prototype, and test the Interoperable Modular Power Unit for Lightweight and Scalable Electric Propulsion (IMPULSE), a combined Power Processing Unit (PPU) that supports both Hall Effect Thrusters (HET) and Arcjet propulsion systems. This innovation will significantly improve satellite maneuverability by offering flexibility and optionality in propulsion modes, leveraging both the high-efficiency operations offered by HET and the rapid orbital transfers offered by Arcjet. The IMPULSE system addresses critical technology gaps in current electric propulsion by integrating modular, configurable power conversion technology. This system allows the same PPU to operate either HET or Arcjet thrusters interchangeably, reducing the size, weight, and power (SWaP) requirements. It leverages state-of-the-art GaN (Gallium Nitride) semiconductors to achieve high conversion efficiency and dynamic feedback control through impedance measurement, optimizing thruster performance and extending operational life. In addition to its technical innovation, IMPULSE supports on-orbit servicing, orbital transfer, refueling, and multi-propellant capabilities, which are essential for sustaining long-duration missions and responding to emerging threats in the space domain. The program’s testing plan includes integration and validation with flight-proven thrusters, ensuring its readiness for deployment across a wide range of satellite platforms. CisLunar Industries has space heritage on high-voltage power electronics. This technology offers significant strategic advantages to the U.S. Space Force by enhancing orbital maneuverability, survivability, and mission flexibility. It directly contributes to the objectives outlined by the Department of Defense (DoD) for space sustainment and maneuver, ensuring that the U.S. maintains its superiority in orbital operations. IMPULSE's development aligns with the goals of AFWERX and AFRL to provide next-generation solutions for space operations, with broad applicability in both defense and commercial sectors.
