Research abstract

Military personnel operating in austere and contested environments face a critical gap in rapid infection detection, which poses a significant threat to operational readiness. Current diagnostic methods rely on laboratory-based culture tests that require days to yield results, delaying treatment and increasing the risk of infections spreading through units. The inability to quickly diagnose infections in the field leads to increased medical evacuations, prolonged downtime, and reduced force effectiveness. WayFinder’s Qsense Bio Device is a portable, rapid infection detection system designed to address this gap by utilizing quorum sensing molecule (QSM) biosensing technology. By detecting bacterial signaling molecules in saliva, urine, blood, or swabs, Qsense enables real-time infection identification without requiring lab infrastructure, ensuring that personnel in dispersed and high-risk environments receive immediate diagnoses and treatment. This capability enhances force health protection, minimizes medical evacuations, and sustains operational effectiveness. The Department of Defense (DoD) has identified early infectious disease detection as a priority, particularly in Agile Combat Employment (ACE) environments, as highlighted in the 2023 Biodefense Posture Review and the Military Infectious Diseases Research Program (MIDRP). WayFinder’s solution aligns with these priorities, offering a disruptive technology that strengthens force health monitoring and operational readiness. Beyond military applications, Qsense has strong commercialization potential in the $25 billion global infection diagnostics market. With applications in hospitals, urgent care, remote healthcare, and biodefense, WayFinder is positioned for sustained growth and market adoption.
