Research abstract

The modern battlefield demands advanced energy storage solutions that enable longer mission durations, higher power outputs, and adaptable integration into various platforms. Traditional lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries face limitations in energy density, safety, and adaptability, particularly in constrained or high-power applications. Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) battery technology offers significant advantages, including superior gravimetric energy density, conformability, and potential for safer operation due to its intrinsic non-flammable chemistry - especially enabling 1) Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs)  The higher energy density chemistry enables longer flight times for ISR, strike, and loitering missions; lightweight design improves payload capacity for advanced sensors and weaponry; conformable form factor allows seamless battery integration into UAV structures, maximizing space utilization; enhanced low-temperature operation ensures reliability in high-altitude and arctic missions.  2) Directed Energy Weapons (DEWs) Li-S battery supports rapid discharge needs for high-energy lasers and microwave weapons; reduces risk of thermal runaway compared to Li-ion, ensuring stable operation in extreme conditions; enables flexible energy storage solutions for both mobile and fixed DEW platforms; higher energy density minimizes battery resupply needs, improving battlefield sustainability.
