Research abstract
While energy sources are becoming more diversified, fossil fuels are still the most prevalent and abundant source of energy, and will continue to account for a significant portion of the energy generated for the foreseeable future. Emerging technologies enable the use of fossil fuel, such as coal, in much more efficient processes and with much lower emissions. Critical to such advancements are integrated control systems that use real time feedback (from parameters such as temperature, pressure, and stream composition) to provide active control. One of the current technological challenges is to develop sensor systems capable of reliable operation in the harsh environment, where high temperature, pressure, and particulates are often present. This project will develop standardized harsh-environment sensor packaging, which will enable the implementation of emerging high temperature MEMS sensors for fossil-fuel-based power systems. Commercial Applications and other Benefits as described by the awardee: The advanced sensor packaging should enable the efficient performance of advanced power systems, leading to a reduced dependence on imported energy and reduced emissions.
