Research abstract

The proposed SBIR research targets the development and application of a novel surface pressure, temperature and heat-transfer diagnostic system for supersonic and subsonic combustion flowfields. The diagnostic techniques are based upon the quenching of pressure-sensitive photoluminescent paint for the pressure measurement and the fluorescence of thermal phosphors for surface temperature and heat transfer measurements. This novel instrument will be capable of both averaged and temporally-spatially precise measurements and will greatly benefit supersonic and subsonic unsteady research performed in modern aerodynamic research facilities. These optical-based, non-intrusive instruments will also serve as test beds for the extension of other full-field flow diagnostic techniques; i.e., Global Doppler Velocimetry, High Resolution Particle Imaging Velocimetry and Planar Laser Induced Fluorescence.
