Research abstract
To address the Navy’s need for an autostereoscopic flight simulator display system for improved depth perception, Intellisense Systems, Inc. (Intellisense) proposes to develop a new Autostereoscopic Field-of-Light Display (AutoFOLD) technology for flight simulator systems. The AutoFOLD system is based on novel implementation of a spatial reality (SR) 3D visualization display that applies the interactive dynamic light-field display concept. Specifically, the innovation in the use oommercial off-the-shelf (COTS) or open-source 3D visualization software tools, with improvement and modification via application-specific external software programs, allows immediate implementation with low risk and cost of development, to provide a comprehensive 3D visualization functionality. Additionally, the innovation in the use of the spatial reality display (SRD) concept applied to a modified high-resolution large format flat-panel displays will enable visualization of hologram-like dynamic 3D imagery without using 3D glasses or augmented reality (AR) headsets, providing correct perspective and parallax views for one or more pilots and operators. As a result, the AutoFOLD system offers the capability to process and visually display flight simulator imagery in a true 3D collaborative visual environment, enabling more effective flight test missions and combat operations, with increased accuracy, reduced response time, and increased overall situational awareness. In Phase I, Intellisense will conduct a feasibility study to identify currently available 3D visualization and display technologies for implementation and development of an AutoFOLD system that can be integrated into the Navy’s cockpit simulator system. This will include an AutoFOLD design that does not require the use of eyewear/glasses/headwear, and is able to meet or exceed the Navy requirements. We will determine technical feasibility through experiments that address extended use from a human factors point of view. The Phase I efforts will include prototype plans to be developed under Phase II. Prototype plans will include methods for incorporation with high-fidelity cockpit simulator systems currently in use by the Navy. In Phase II, Intellisense plans to develop and build a functional AutoFOLD prototype through design, test, and integration of the system for evaluation of the system’s performance and capabilities, human factors analysis, and psychological assessment for simulator sickness and human performance. We will determine whether the AutoFOLD can be used as a replacement to current flight simulator display systems and identify, address, and document deficiencies and areas for improvement.
