Research abstract

The ultimate goal of this effort is to develop state-of-the-art software that performs data fusion on ship hull sensors including reference cell voltage, hull polarization voltage, hull current, salinity, temperature, etc. This research will lead to theoptimal control of the Impressed Current Cathodic Protection (ICCP), the prediction of failures like paint removal, remaining anode life, and bridge formation as a means for reliably estimating the remaining life-cycle and planning for dry docking andother condition based maintenance (CBM). Reliable prediction and mitigation of hull corrosion is one of the single most important aspects for the condition-based maintenance (CBM) of the seawater system. No commercial product for performing this task iscurrently available.Extending the interval between dry docking periods one cycle (18-24 months), would allow substantial savings of over $8.6 million dollars per year for a fleet of 56 ships. The technology developed in this research would reduce the lifecycle cost and increase the availability of the fleet.
