Research abstract

The VIBE (Versatile Integration for Biometric Equipment) system addresses the Department of Homeland Security's need for a secure, portable, and hard-wired biometric integration solution. The proposed system consists of a compact adapter that seamlessly connects biometric devices, such as fingerprint and iris scanners, to mobile platforms via USB-C or Lightning ports. VIBE’s innovative approach leverages USB Communication Device Class (CDC) Ethernet emulation, enabling plug-and-play compatibility with Android and iOS devices without requiring custom drivers. Custom driver solutions for iOS are high risk and unrealistic. Phase I focuses on developing functional models to validate the system’s core electronic and software architecture and creating 3D hardware models to optimize usability and ergonomic design. This includes integrating commercially available biometric devices, demonstrating data transfer capabilities, and validating plug-and-play functionality. The project also involves a comprehensive requirements analysis and a technical review of commercially available biometric devices to ensure compliance with DHS standards. By addressing key barriers to biometric integration, such as device compatibility and driver development challenges, VIBE reduces technical and programmatic risks. The Phase I effort provides a low-risk foundation for a Phase II prototype, which will refine the design into a rugged, field-ready solution. With its scalable and modular architecture, VIBE offers a cost-effective, adaptable system that meets the evolving needs of DHS and other stakeholders requiring secure biometric solutions. The project will enable rapid deployment and provide a critical capability for DHS operations in high-security and field environments.
