Research abstract

To address the DHS need for a biometric capture device interconnection cable/adapter, Intellisense Systems, Inc. (Intellisense) proposes to develop a Flexible, Agile, Portable, Wired (FLOW) cable/adapter, which leverages mature TRL-9 COTS components, an innovative mechanical design, and smart circuitry to deliver a portable interconnection solution that enables mobile devices (Android and iOS) and biometric capture devices to be handheld effectively as a single unit. Designed to support both power connection and data transfer through Lightning and USB C ports, FLOW ensures reliable charging (12 W/2.4 A) and high-speed data transfer rates of 480 Mbps or better. It is compatible with COTS/GOTS biometric capture devices, supporting Android and iOS applications, handheld fingerprint (4 slap) and iris peripherals, and face and contactless fingerprint capture using the phone’s camera. FLOW also includes biometric capture device drivers, an application programming interface, and interface software that conforms to both Android 10 and iOS 13 and above, with safeguards for privacy, cybersecurity, civil rights, and civil liberties. As a result, it supports biometric capture peripherals that conform to ANSI/NIST-ITL standards, ISO/IEC 29794-6:2015, and the Electronic Biometric Transmission Specification. In Phase I, Intellisense will demonstrate feasibility by modeling data transfer and power integration pathways and developing a schematic to show that the entire package can be handheld effectively as a single unit. In Phase II, Intellisense will produce and deliver a prototype that captures contact fingerprint and iris biometrics on Android and iOS platforms and supports both Lightning and USB C connections while meeting DHS requirements.
