Research abstract

The need to keep pollutant emissions at ultra-low levels has led to the development of oxy-fuel combustion. This process requires a reheat combustor component to operate stably in the high-steam-content, high-temperature, high-pressure environment of clean coal technologies. However, inadequate mixing in the reheat combustor causes unwanted acoustics or quenching. This project will develop a novel approach for mixing the three streams of oxygen, syngas, and steam for complete combustion. Phase I will analytically optimize and demonstrate the validity of the novel integrated premixer-injector system for the reheat combustion cycle. Phase II will involve the fabrication and testing of a single can combustor at conditions simulating engine operation. Commercial Applications and other Benefits as described by the awardee: Successful commercialization of the combustor for the reheat cycle should help enable the use of clean coal for power generation through Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle (IGCC) technologies.
