Research abstract

Airborne multispectral remote sensing has been an enabling technology for identification of activities associated with the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction. However, existing technologies have limitations with respect to color-switching speed, temperature range, throughput, and spectral range. To address these limitations, a higher-performance tunable imaging filter is needed. This project will develop a unique filter based on an extremely large electro-optic effect. The approach will provide ultra-fast wavelength tuning ¿ an ability to change wavelengths in microseconds ¿ enabling higher spectral and spatial resolutions for remote sensing applications. The filter will cover the spectral range from visible to middle-IR, with wide tunability. In addition, the filter will have very compact structure, high throughput, no moving parts and all solid-state operation. Commercial Applications and other Benefits as described by the awardee: The proposed multispectral remote sensing technology should fulfill a wide variety of government mission needs: military/security missions such as object detection and identification, surveillance through clouds, detection of chemical/biological weapons, etc. Other applications include environmental protection, agriculture productivity, and emergency response.
