Research abstract

The purpose of this Phase I project is to demonstrate a feasibility of using room-temperature, air and water stable molten salts to fabricate advanced non-lithium batteries as compact, high power, quick reacting, long term inert storable energy sources for use in military weapons or missile targets. Recently, some room-temperature and low temperature molten salt electrolytes have been found to be suitable for the fabrication of lithium-based batteries with improvements in battery conductivity and safety. in this project, it is intended to investigate some of the most interesting molten salts in order to fabricate advanced non-lithium, air and water-stable, rocking-chair type batteries. 'Me key to the proposed battery systems is that room-temperature, air and water stable molten salts will serve as electrolytes as well as provide ions to be intercalated into both anode and cathode without the involvement of any Li ions or metals in the battery systems. The proposed novel battery system will have, several advantages including: high conductivity, quick reacting, high cell voltage, high energy density, small size, safe to operate, and long service life. The developed new batteries will have a variety of military and commercial applications.
