Research abstract

Energy storage technology, including batteries and electrochemical capacitors, is one of the critical technical barriers to the development of cost-effective hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs). HEVs and PHEVs require high energy storage density and high power density so that they can deliver high power pulses and accept high power recharging pulses from regenerative braking. This project will optimize previously developed carbon nanosheet electrodes and metal oxide-based electrodes for asymmetric electrochemical capacitors. Phase I will build and test initial devices and determine a manufacturing path for producing prototype devices. The Phase I goal is to develop a single-cell asymmetric electrochemical capacitor capable of sustaining an energy density >10 Wh/kg, power density >1000 W/kg, a cycle life >300,000 cycles, and a 20-year calendar life. Commercial Applications and other Benefits as described by the awardee: If successful, electrochemical capacitors will be mass-produced for integration into hybrid electric vehicles, improving their energy storage capabilities and reducing cost.
