Research abstract

Modeling and simulation (M&S) is critical to developing Army capabilities and requirements and informs Army force design, force sizing, and operational employment decisions. The aim of this effort is to integrate novel artificial intelligence/machine learning (AI/ML) approaches with existing Army combined arms M&S tools to automate scenario generation. In a typical study more time is spent gathering data and building and validating scenarios than is spent running test cases and analyzing results. Ideally, simulation analysts should spend most of their time on these later steps, so the goal of this research is to greatly reduce the time spent on these earlier steps.ááOptTek Systems, Inc. (OptTek) proposes an AI/ML approach to scenario generation using synthetic data and large language models (LLMs) that will result in the rapid generation of complete or near-complete combat simulation scenarios from natural language descriptions. The proposed work focuses on synthetic data generation and new uses of LLMs for combat simulation scenario generation. Existing simulation scenarios will be reverse engineered to create paired natural language descriptions and the actual scenarios that can be used for LLM training. OptTek will also utilize a GPT and Codex-based LLM, informed with the generated training data, and initiated with the right prompts, to enable combat simulation scenario generation from natural language descriptions of desired scenarios.á
