Research abstract

WingXpand designs, develops and manufactures next-generation autonomous unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) to keep our Soldiers safe, farmers grow more yield, and public safety officials triage disasters faster and monitor our homeland. Central to our family of UAS is a modular open systems architecture, allowing the integration of third-party hardware and software payloads onboard our aircraft, in addition to a design around a powerful on-board edge AI computer for autonomous operations.             WingXpand successfully executed and exceeded the initial scope of the Army xTech SBIR Autonomy Phase I contract (W51701-24-C-0066) which enabled us to validate the feasibility of developing our software architecture to not only deploy our growing library of AI models for autonomous threat detection onboard our UAS, but also third-party software for collaborative robotics and swarming.  In this Phase II, WingXpand proposes a low-risk plan to expand and successfully translate the SDK’s capabilities from a lab environment to a system ready for flight testing in Army relevant operational scenarios.  WingXpand directly collaborates with “Big 5” defense prime and they serve as a candidate transition partner to incorporate additional payloads and software onto WingXpand’s open systems architecture UAS.  For the proposed Phase II initiative, we will be incorporating third-party advanced autonomy C2 software  on WingXpand’s SDK for deployment on WingXpand UAS. Additionally, in the proposed Phase II initiative, we will be integrating additional modules for GPS denied navigation  and testing in Army operational environments
