Research abstract

Resilient communications for autonomous and remotely operated systems are crucial to multi-domain operations dominance. Uncrewed platforms are susceptible to unpredictably dropped, jammed, degraded, or lost signals without warning or remediation. While current communications solutions provide basic parameters like received signal strength indicators and signal-to-noise ratios, these simplistic outputs under-inform operators and ignore critical information required for effective spectrum management. krtkl’s Spectrum Monitoring and Advanced Communication Kit (SMACK) enhances end-user and defense-force lethality, flexibility, and effectiveness through:Real-time radio frequency (RF) analysisRF spectrum monitoring and mappingDistributed sensing and processingRF and non-RF sensor fusionSimplified information displaysA system designed to ingest disparate data, conduct real-time analysis, and perform edge-based processing to monitor and map signals of interest (SoI) with simple suggestions to operators will produce better-informed decisionmakers, reduce cognitive loads, and decrease risks to forward-deployed assets and personnel. The system will ingest selected SoI for real-time analysis in conjunction with non-RF sensor suites such as geolocation and inertial devices. The result will be systems and operators that are situationally aware of their Electromagnetic Operating Environment (EMOE) and how to effectively manage it, allowing operators, commanders, and fully autonomous systems to adapt to EMOE changes and combat EW threats.
