Research abstract

WingXpand has the capability to transform the U.S. Army with a portable, survivable, open-systems architecture autonomous system for extended flight in GPS-denied areas, launched anywhere, at any time. WingXpandÆs innovative software architecture enables rapid deployment of Army relevant algorithms at the edge, without reliance on internet connectivity. Onboard edge AI also supports autonomous GPS-denied operations.ĀĀWingXpand enhances situational awareness, reduces operator burden, and strengthens the Army's AI ecosystem as a trusted platform capable of efficiently deploying new AI algorithms created by the DoD or trusted contractors. It aligns perfectly with xTechSBIR Autonomy, addressing adaptable platforms in cluttered, urban, and contested environments while reducing logistical burdens. WingXpand also aligns with the Army's goals for autonomous ground and air vehicles, providing effective mobility in irregular terrains and contested environments. Its low electronic and physical profiles and reduced logistical burdens meet the Army's requirements. The open systems architecture supports diverse payloads and enables rapid operator training, enhancing mission flexibility and situational awareness. Overall, WingXpand offers novel solutions and significant advancements in autonomy and operational edge AI enabled compute capabilities, benefiting the Army's operations with improved performance and cost savings. WingXpand sUAS is designed to confront the ever-evolving threats faced by the Army. We acknowledge adversaries' constant adaptation to advancing technologies and ensure that WingXpand remains scalable and future proof. To achieve this, our software architecture is modular, designed to facilitate rapid adaptation to diverse operational challenges. We excel in deploying swift, mission-tailored autonomous systems by harnessing simulated and real-world data for rigorous training, validation, and testing of AI models and autonomous reconnaissance algorithms. As depicted in Figure 2, we offer a range of funded AI modules, including vehicle detection and tracking, perimeter security, wildfire detection, and operations in GPS-compromised settings. This modularity guarantees that our solutions stay relevant and ĀĀĀ ĀĀĀĀĀĀĀĀĀĀ future-ready. We use an agile development process for timely feature updates based on user feedback.ĀĀWe employ a modular data pipeline, like a factory assembly line, facilitating adaptability in object-detection tasks. Utilizing a human-in-the-loop model, we combine AI's quick processing with human expertise to enhance precision, particularly in crucial areas like threat detection. This combination ensures both adaptability and heightened accuracy.
