Research abstract

In contemporary fusion research, there is a need to to simulate the integrated behavior of the fusion ¿blanket¿ ¿ complicated systems of different functional materials (breeder, multiplier, coolant, structure, insulator, etc.) in various configurations with many responses and interacting phenomena. This project will build a Virtual Test Blanket Module (VTBM) computational system to address this need. The physical phenomena to be considered in the VTBM include tritium generation, fluid flow, heat transfer, radiation effects on the structure, and the effect of electromagnetic fields. A well conceived virtual environment would integrate these phenomena with proper communications across modules. Such an environment also would account for both steady and pulsed modes, as well as the effect of plasma disruptions and other transient processes. The approach will focus on efficient, data exchange techniques between code modules and computer-aided-design (CAD) models. Effective visual interfaces will be used to integrate a heterogeneous high performance computing environment. Phase I will develop a blueprint for a comprehensive VTBM that can accommodate a current set of codes and have the ability to interface with third party software. A visual environment with functional links to the heat transfer and MHD modules, and with inter-module communication via template-based CAD, will be made and validated. . Commercial Applications and Other Benefits as described by the awardee: The visual computing environment would be essential for computer-based design and testing in virtually every field of engineering. The technology should address a contemporary need in the fusion community in light of the ongoing activities related to the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER).
