Research abstract

To support the migration of JCPMS to NDI/COTS, SPS proposes the development of the JCPMS Domain Modeling and Architecture Toolkit (JD-MAT). JD-MAT builds on the latest research in the areas of domain modeling and architectural descriptions as a means of building systems belonging to a single product line. In addition, JD-MAT supports analysis and adaptation of existing software components for incorporation into the design of a system. By considering domain and architectural issues, we expect that significant reuse of system specifications, designs, and software can result. As such, the construction of interoperable service specific communications planning and management systems, as envisioned for JCPMS, will be facilitated. Our approach is based on an innovative tool building technology, named Insight, that supports rapid construction of graphical information modeling tools. These tools can be rapidly built, without programming, and thus be constructed to meet the exact modeling needs of a specific domain. Using InSight we can cost-effectively build domain and architectural modeling tools for JCPMS. These tools will support analysis and specification of models and architectures common to all services and specializations of these for service specific considerations. The ability to develop product families of automated systems can be greatly improved through the use of domain and architectural modeling techniques. Several NASA, DoD, and commercial organizations are attempting to build product lines such as in flight control systems, weapon systems, and factory automation systems. The work proposed here will develop technologies for domain specific modeling tools and and support the incorporation of NDI/COTS components into new systems designs.
