Research abstract
In contemporary contested naval environments, effective management and utilization of logistics data are paramount for mission success. This proposal introduces a blockchain-enabled object-based production system designed to address the complexities of modern naval operations, characterized by intermittent communication, supply chain disruptions, and diverse data environments. Utilizing a federated blockchain architecture supplemented by sidechains, the system ensures the continuity of critical logistics operations even in low-bandwidth or disconnected scenarios. This decentralized, tamper-evident ledger enhances data security and accountability, ultimately bolstering mission resilience.Central to this solution is an Object Management System (OMS) that efficiently manages heterogeneous data sources, including logistics data and operational reports, while enforcing strict governance through ontology-based frameworks. The OMS facilitates the modular organization of logistics data into linked objects via knowledge graphs, ensuring data integrity, traceability, and extensibility across Navy operations. Key features include the integration of reasoning engines that provide real-time insights through predictive analytics and automated decision support, empowering commanders to make informed logistical decisions regarding resupply and resource allocation. Additionally, the system’s containerized blockchain nodes and hybrid architecture offer scalability and flexibility, allowing seamless integration with existing Navy infrastructure and secure communication in denied, degraded, intermittent, and limited (DDIL) environments. The incorporation of IoT devices enhances real-time monitoring capabilities, feeding granular data into predictive models that continuously optimize operations. Furthermore, the system's AI-driven analytics facilitate proactive insights, enabling commanders to anticipate challenges and maintain operational readiness. This Phase II proposal aims to develop, prototype, and implement the system in alignment with Navy requirements, ultimately delivering a secure, efficient, and reliable logistics platform. Beyond its initial focus on naval logistics, the proposed technology is extensible across various domains, including intelligence analysis and cybersecurity, ensuring adaptability and resilience in diverse operational contexts. By enhancing data clarity and providing actionable insights, this solution positions the Navy to maintain logistical superiority and mission success in the most challenging environments.
