Research abstract

In the proposed Phase I project Akita Innovations will team with Professor Timothy Swager of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology to develop scalable synthetic processes for the fabrication of Intrinsically Porous Organic Polymers (iPOPs).  iPOPs are designed by fusing free-volume generating units directly into the polymer backbone.  iPoPs prepared from low cost starting materials at the laboratory scale have yielded soluble high molecular weight polymers with surface areas of more than 1000m2/g.  This project will scale the fabrication of these iPOPs to 1kg production.  We will also demonstrate post-synthetic modification of iPOPS for the incorporation of nucleophilic moieties.
