Research abstract

The ultimate goal of this Phase II SBIR project is to develop state-of-the-art software that performs Multi-Sensor Fusion on crevice corrosion detection sensors. These sensors are used on Navy ship seawater system to mitigate corrosion using ImpressedCurrent Cathodic Protection with advanced decision making capability (Smart ICCP). Key project innovations include: (1) development of Multi-Sensor Fusion software which integrates various crevice corrosion detection sensor measurements, (2) intelligentcondition based monitoring (CBM) software that uses state-of-the-art techniques like artificial neural networks (ANN) and fuzzy logic to detect incipient crevice conditions, and (3) novel crevice corrosion mitigation capabilities using In-Situ Smart ICCPwith optimal control. The proposed innovations would lead to the prediction and mitigation of crevice corrosion in the Navy's seawater system, resulting in significant manpower and machine-time savings. The developed product will be tested for naturalseawater conditions at the Key West Navy Research Laboratory. It is anticipated that a field-ready prototype product will be available for the Navy by the end of this Phase II project.
