Research abstract

Rechargeable Li-ion batteries are a key energy storage technology for a variety of applications, in vehicles, robotics/Autonomous systems, communication devices and many other applications in Defense. Making rechargeable batteries lighter and more powerful is a bottleneck issue across multitude of use cases for the warfighter. The lack of high energy density is mainly due to low capacity of the commonly used graphitic anode in battery cells (maximal, 372 mAh/g), which is responsible for storing the electric charge transferred by Lithium between negative and positive electrodes. HeXalayer addresses the issue of low-capacity graphitic material by offering newly designed graphene material that would provide significant high gravimetric capacity (over 1,200 mA/g) of the cells and improve the energy density (up to 600 Wh/kg), while avoiding the safety challenges of  high energy density Silicon and Li Metal solutions.
