Research abstract

The Army seeks to develop Hybrid Electric Powertrain, Power, and Propulsion System (HEPPS) technology solutions for integration with Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), helicopters, Vertical Take-Off and Landing (VTOL) aircraft, and small fixed-wing aircraft. In response, Scaled Power Inc. (SPI) proposes a cutting-edge turbogenerator technology based on a novel gas turbine architecture, optimized for use within HEPPS platforms. This solution has the potential to revolutionize fuel economy, performance, and mission flexibility across multiple aircraft types.SPI’s turbogenerator integrates the high energy density of liquid fuels with the high power density and efficiency of modern batteries and electric motors. This hybrid approach, combined with advanced solid-state power control systems, enables optimal fuel efficiency, rapid power response, and enhanced overall performance. Key benefits of the system include:Optimized Fuel Economy and Performance: By leveraging hybrid energy sources, the system maximizes operational efficiency and power output, reducing fuel consumption while maintaining high levels of performance.Extended Operational Capabilities: The system enables new tactical possibilities for UAVs, allowing for longer durations of operation beyond line of sight, thus increasing mission versatility and effectiveness.Increased Onboard Electrical Power: The turbogenerator serves as an electric Auxiliary Power Unit (APU) or a Mission Power Unit (MPU), delivering additional onboard electrical power to meet the specific requirements of advanced payloads and mission scenarios. The proposed HEPPS solution offers the Army a pathway to modernize its aviation platforms, supporting both manned and unmanned aircraft with increased endurance, operational flexibility, and enhanced power capabilities.
