Research abstract

This proposal aims to develop an innovative Hybrid Electric Powertrain, Power, and Propulsion System (HEPPS) for next-generation military aircraft and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). The modular system addresses critical challenges in VTOL aircraft propulsion, combining the advantages of combustion engines and electric systems while overcoming their limitations. Key features include distributed electric propulsion using multiple high-performance Electric Ducted Fans (EDFs) with patent-pending vector thrust technology, full embodiment within the aircraft structure for stealth designs, advanced acoustic shielding, and a thermal management system. This unique combination enables precise control and maneuverability without the need for tilting mechanisms, while also enhancing stealth capabilities. The Phase I effort will focus on demonstrating HEPPS feasibility through computational modeling, critical component definition, hybrid propulsion integration studies, and preliminary design of a new Army aircraft concept. The technology builds upon foundational research by NASA and the U.S. Air Force, with successful proof-of-concept prototype testing and recognition in military innovation challenges. This scalable, VTOL-focused hybrid propulsion technology has the potential to redefine military aviation capabilities, enabling stealthy VTOL aircraft, long-endurance surveillance drones, agile multi-role combat platforms, and versatile cargo/transport vehicles operable from austere locations. By advancing this technology, including its novel vector thrust mechanisms, the Army can leverage a transformative solution across its future manned and unmanned aircraft fleet, positioning itself at the forefront of aerospace innovation. The proposed HEPPS offers significant advantages over conventional propulsion systems, including improved fuel efficiency, reduced acoustic and thermal signatures, and enhanced operational flexibility. Its modular design allows for rapid adaptation to various mission requirements and platform sizes, from small tactical UAVs to larger manned aircraft. The system's compatibility with multiple hybrid-electric configurations and power sources, including hydrogen fuel cells and sustainable fuels, ensures its relevance in the evolving landscape of military aviation. As the Army seeks to modernize its aerial capabilities, this innovative propulsion technology presents a promising pathway to achieve superior performance, increased survivability, and reduced logistical footprint across diverse operational scenarios.
