Research abstract

The Department of Defense (DoD) and the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) launched the Advanced Distributing Learning (ADL) initiative in the fall of 1997 to accelerate the development of cost-effective learning software.support this goal, ADL developed the Sharable Content Objective Reference Model (SCORM). This Phase I SBIR addresses the requirement for hosting 3D content from a SCORM-compliant Learning Management System (LMS) server. The proposed solution consists of a 3D framework that implements an extensible file structure based on XML, a mechanism to support embedded object behavior, and a SCORM-compliant interface layer. The framework will be wrapped in a simplifieduser-interface based on open, cross-platform standards and an open-source distribution model. Completion of the proposed effort will provide ADL with a prototype of an extensible and freely distributable 3D content model that is SCORM-compliant. The technology required to implement this architecture has commercial applications in Computer Aided Design, animation, and web-based 3D content arenas.
