Research abstract

The Safe Modular Advanced Ruggedization Technology (SMART) Battery aims to address critical vulnerabilities in the U.S. Army’s energy storage capabilities, offering a solution that combines high energy density, enhanced safety, and rugged performance. Traditional lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries, while advantageous in terms of energy density, are prone to failure in high-impact and extreme environmental conditions, leading to risks such as thermal runaway, fire, and explosion. The SMART Battery, developed by Safire Group, integrates Safe Impact Resistant Electrolyte (SAFIRE) technology, a patented shear-thickening liquid-to-solid electrolyte that prevents shorting and eliminates thermal runaway during high-impact events. This innovative technology, spun out of Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), provides impact resistance and ballistic protection, preventing catastrophic battery failures under extreme conditions. The SMART Battery is designed to be modular, scalable, and interoperable across different battery chemistries, ensuring safe and reliable energy storage in austere environments. It also enhances battery performance by incorporating silicon anodes, which provide up to 30% increased energy density compared to traditional systems, while SAFIRE technology further improves battery stability and cycling performance without compromising charge/discharge rates. In Phase I, the SMART Battery development will focus on assessing the feasibility of integrating high-density silicon anodes, SAFIRE technology, and advanced Battery Management Systems (BMS) for optimal performance in extreme environments. This effort will also include testing for impact and ballistic resistance, as well as a feasibility study to ensure compliance with U.S. Army safety standards. The SMART Battery has the potential to revolutionize energy storage for military applications, enabling safer, more efficient, and more resilient power solutions.
