Research abstract

Readiness and production, costs and rates, have outpaced the feasibility and capacity of the defense industrial base (DIB) to meet the strategic needs of the Great Power Competition and the intensifying geopolitical climate when investments in warfighting capability and modernization are paramount. In accordance with DoD Instruction 5000.94, Use of Robotic Systems for Manufacturing and Sustainment in the DoD, automation and robotics are recognized as a solution to address this problem to not only meet the current national defense need but allow for warfighting capability enhancements via the benefits of this technology for feasibility, efficiency, precision, and safety. Titan proposes for this phase 1 effort to evaluate applying Titan's Agile Robotics EcoSystem (ARES) to mobile robotic sanding of metallic and composite aircraft substrates outside of a traditional robotic workcell configuration.
