Research abstract

Classroom teachers need formative assessment tools that give them easy and accurate information on student perfomance. Large scale assessments provide accountability data useful in evaluating progress across states and within school districts, but are not designed to directly impact classroom practice. Research shows us that student performance on standardized test can be impacted by test anxiety, poor reading skills, ESL, and student apathy in addition to math competency. Because gaming addresses these concerns,Triad Digital Media, Inc. proposes to develop an online assessment tool in the form of a computer game to assess fourth graders mathematical understanding.
