Research abstract

The object-oriented (OO) paradigm has demonstrated that it can produce software systems that are more reliable, have greater re-use capabilities, and are easier to understand, maintain, and modify. As the technology matures, the desire to convert large-scale, non-OO systems into OO systems increases. The need for an intelligent assistant to support such undertakings has surfaced. Such an assistant should automate an effective II design method in an integrated enviromnment to support the entire life-cycle issues of OO system development. We propose to use IDEF4 [20], a method developed by the Air Force for supporting OO design, as the basis for such an intelligent assistant. The design support system proposed herein would offer the benefits of OO design not only to new systems design efforts, but also to teams wrestling with the conversion of large-scale non-OO systems to OO. assistant intelligent
