Research abstract

Safire Technology Group proposes the development of a next-generation Battery-As-Structure (BATT-S) system for eVTOLs, leveraging their proprietary Safe Impact Resistant Electrolyte (SAFIRE) technology. This system will enhance both the safety and performance of eVTOL platforms by integrating Lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries into the structural components of the vehicle, such as the fuselage and chassis. SAFIRE is a patented liquid-to-solid shear thickening electrolyte that mitigates thermal runaway and provides ballistic protection during crashes or impacts. It is designed to prevent battery fires and explosions by transitioning from a liquid to a solid state under mechanical stress, reducing the risk of energy discharge. This innovation transforms Li-ion batteries from passive power sources into active structural components, increasing energy density, reducing vehicle weight, and improving flight range. The SAFIRE technology is scalable and can be applied to any Li-ion battery chemistry, offering significant safety and performance enhancements for both defense and commercial applications. In this Phase I SBIR, Safire will adapt and demonstrate its technology for Department of the Air Force use cases, focusing on increased mission range, stability, and safety in eVTOL operations. The outcome of this research will lay the groundwork for further development in Phase II, where Safire’s technology will be tailored for other defense platforms and broader commercial applications, including electric vehicles, unmanned systems, and aerospace.
