Research abstract

The electrolyte of SAFIRE-integrated battery cells undergoes a “solidification under stress” chemical reaction, imparting orders of magnitude structural deformation resistance and up to ballistic levels of protection during an impact event and returns to fluid state reliably once the impact stress is removed, restoring the conductivity of the electrolyte to continue powering communication, data and other critical systems within the SAM-SCIF. This behavior can also be triggered by a mechanism applying shear force to the battery, allowing anticipatory resistance to attack or maintenance-free long term storage.   SAFIRE makes Li-ion batteries safer, enabling their use in previously risk-prone applications. This allows for the exploration of battery-as-structure focused designs, where the shear-thickening characteristics of SAFIRE battery cell technology can be leveraged to provide the warfighter with extremely weight optimized deployable SCIF solutions, extending the range of secure technologies once not available in expeditionary environments or sites with evolving footprints and infrastructure needs. SAFIRE shear thickening-enabled battery cells will be affixed to an enclosed, unitized, modular and configurable “wall building block” (Interlocking Impact Resistant Energy Storage aka “MIIRES”) by way of crossbeam structures. These cross beams will extend outward and crosslink between MIIRES wall building blocks to transfer the concussive, ballistic, or other blunt force exerted upon one modular block to the adjacent block, thereby enabling the broadest possible distribution of the impact force across a shear-thickening lattice structure of dual use impact protection energy storage.
