Research abstract

EO/IR sensors are a key enabling technology for defense and aerospace systems that must operate in extreme and harsh environments.  Applications include high velocity air vehicles, missiles, and projectiles, including hypersonic systems.  Infrared seeker cameras and electronics require transparent protective windows capable of surviving and maintaining precision optical performance in unrelenting and intense aero-thermal conditions.   CeraNova's advanced transparent ceramics outperform existing and conventional materials such as sapphire, delivering superior optical, mechanical, and thermal performance.  CeraNova's products are manufactured using advanced net shape fabrication processes that enable complex designs and much larger component sizes than can be realized with other materials.  A comprehensive trades assessment of protective window material options will be a valuable tool for air frame and seeker system designers.  In this program, a thorough trades study of CeraNova materials versus sapphire will be compiled for the Air Force.  The study will include micro-structural, optical, and thermal analysis of selected test coupons along with data previously acquired.  We will also identify and meet with potential AF stakeholders to better understand technical needs and requirements and to outline the work to be proposed in a Phase II effort.  In the Phase II program we will work with the stakeholders and Prime contractors to manufacture prototypes for the highest priority applications.
