Research abstract

We propose to develop oxidizing environment-stable, thermal management coatings to increase efficiency, durability, and survivability of critical aerospace structures and systems.  Nanoionix and Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory (JHUAPL) have demonstrated exceptional capabilities to design/synthesize multicomponent metal oxides with intricate control of composition, phase, stoichiometry, and selective spectral emissivity, and for designing, fabricating, and evaluating the thermal, spectral, and durability attributes of coating systems made from these materials. This includes materials with controlled spectral emissivity that can withstand >1500°C. Our team will apply and evaluate coating systems on internal and external surfaces and test in the laboratory under relevant operating conditions. We have the technical expertise, contacts, and clearances necessary to interface with the appropriate Air Force Programs and Technical Divisions. In line with Air Force requirements, our commercialization plan will address the $6B global market for thermal barrier coatings with a focus on aerospace and industrial applications, as well as adjacent markets in infrared reflective roofing materials. During Phase I the Nanoionix team will further optimize these materials/coatings guided by experimental results and our extensive database of materials and applications. Phase II will focus on materials/coatings optimization and downselection with samples provided to the Air Force for independent evaluation.
