Research abstract

79629B Cutting-edge applications in high energy electron beam-based physics, such as linear colliders, x-ray free-electron lasers, inverse compton scattering sources, and plasma wakefield accelerators, require beams with sub-picosecond pulses. These beams must be precisely diagnosed to be used for such advanced applications. While methods for the production of such beams are well-developed, the necessary diagnostics for accurate characterization are yet to be developed. In this project, a traveling-wave, x-band deflecting cavity will be designed to solve the problem of complete longitudinal measurement of ultra-short electron bunches. The approach will take advantage of the greater efficiency and compactness of X-band radio frequency (RF) structures, in concert with modern high-power X-band sources. In Phase I, the RF structure will be designed, a cold-test prototype will be built and tested, the detector system will be planned, and a manufacturing design for the device will be prepared. All of the above steps will be directed toward application at very-high energy, ultra-short bunch facilities, with beam dynamics simulations performed to guide the work. Commercial Applications and Other Benefits as described by the awardee: The traveling wave X-band RF deflector should address the diagnostic needs of advanced accelerators. A commercial diagnostic instrument would be made available to high energy physics facilities. The technology also should have application to light sources, as well as accelerators for industrial and military applications.
