Research abstract

Currently, evaluations of the structural components in a nuclear reactor require scheduled interruptions in the reactor¿s operations for off-line inspection and possible replacement of damaged components. At present, no method exists for in-line evaluation because available structural monitoring solutions are unstable in a high-radiation/high-temperature environment. This project will develop a health monitoring system for nuclear reactor structural components based on a revolutionary all-fiber-optic ultrasonic technology. Phase I will develop and demonstrate the operation of such a system in a nuclear reactor at moderate neutron doses. In Phase II, the structural monitoring of stainless steel samples in a nuclear reactor will be demonstrated at realistic levels of radiation and temperatures. Commercial Applications and other Benefits as described by the awardee The in-line health monitoring of a nuclear reactor¿s structural components would enable the commercialization of Gen-IV reactor designs, as well as increase safety in PWR (pressurized water reactors) and other Gen-III designs already in operation. These radiation-tolerant, high-temperature sensors and transducers also should find application in space probes, rocket engine monitoring, rocket engine development, and gas turbine health monitoring
