Research abstract

Kronos leverages a diversity of on-board sensors, high precision optical two-way time transfer between satellites, and networked time transfer across a constellation, to provide a leap-ahead improvement for in-space PNT calculations and distribution that fortifies PWSA resilience and capability to maintain accurate timing in an evolving threat environment. This approach is designed to require minimal user resource application for success by taking advantage of, and building on, existing PWSA BMC3 processor compute capability, OISLs, and constellation networking. The specific capability is an open-interface, distributed alternative-PNT application scaled for delivering GNSS-optional, high-accuracy PNT data to heterogenous satellites with differing local PNT capabilities, thus providing greatly improved PNT data across the networked constellation with minimal compute, sensor, and hardware requirements for participating satellites. The capability is resilient to GNSS denial, changing/unpredictable conditions, and local PNT quality/sensor diversity. In addition, CAMBRIAN will provide an open standards prototype hardware A-PNT module that provides the required real-time timetagging and operations necessary for capability functionality in an easy-to-integrate package compatible with SDA BMC3 processors. Such a system provides resilience in the increasingly congested and contested space domain, providing both government and commercial utility. Kronos results in delivery of an On-Orbit Distributed Resilient TRL-6 A-PNT capability and a real-time hardware module capable of integrating with SDA-compatible BMC3 processors to provide real-time A-PNT sensor input and operations. By leveraging a modular approach, Kronos augments existing PNT solutions and leverages minimal requirements on satellite or terminal providers. This capability will be suitable for follow-on operational demonstration in 2026.
